Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide clear, accurate American Sign Language interpretation for students, staff, and families across school settings
• Facilitate communication in classrooms, IEP meetings, and school events to ensure access and inclusion
• Collaborate with teachers, special education teams, and support staff to support student learning objectives
• Prepare for assignments by reviewing lesson content and coordinating with educators when needed
• Maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and high ethical standards in all interactions
• Document services and contribute to communication plans that enhance student outcomes

Qualifications

• Fluent in American Sign Language and experienced in ASL interpretation in educational settings
• Preferred: Certification or membership such as RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) or state educational interpreter credential
• Experience working with K-12 students, special education teams, or Deaf education programs is highly valued
• Willingness to obtain required school district background checks and clearances
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Education, or related field preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Expertise in ASL structure, register, and educational interpreting techniques
• Knowledge of K-12 classroom dynamics and educational terminology
• Skilled at sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting as appropriate
• Cultural competence and sensitivity to Deaf culture and student needs
• Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills
