Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide attentive post-anesthesia care to pediatric patients in the PACU
• Monitor vital signs and assess recovery progress, intervening as needed
• Manage airway, pain control, and IV therapies with pediatric best practices
• Administer medications safely and document all care in the patient record
• Communicate clearly with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the care team to ensure seamless handoffs
• Educate and support families during the recovery process with compassion and clarity
• Participate in orientation, unit practices, and quality improvement initiatives

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse licensure (state licensure requirements apply)
• Clinical experience or training in PACU or perioperative nursing, especially with pediatric patients
• Current BLS certification required; PALS or pediatric life support recommended
• Comfort with pediatric assessment, airway management, and post-anesthesia protocols
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced surgical recovery setting
• Willingness to complete orientation and any required facility-specific training

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) typical for the role

Knowledge & Skills

• Pediatric post-anesthesia recovery and assessment
• Airway and respiratory management for children
• IV therapy, medication administration, and pain management
• Familiarity with perioperative workflows and PACU protocols
• Accurate clinical documentation and electronic health record use
• Teamwork, situational awareness, and family-centered care
