Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert neurocritical nursing care for adults with stroke, hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, post-craniotomy and other neurosurgical needs
• Manage mechanically ventilated patients, including ventilator adjustments, suctioning, and HFNC/BiPAP support
• Safely access and manage arterial lines, central lines, PICCs and external ventricular drains (EVD/ICP monitoring)
• Administer and monitor continuous IV sedation, vasoactive and cardiac drips, and titrate medications per protocol
• Perform blood product administration and IV insulin protocol management when indicated
• Respond to cardiac dysrhythmias and obtain/interpret 12-lead EKGs while providing emergency medication support
• Deliver post-op neurosurgical care including lumbar drains and bedside procedures in collaboration with the team
• Champion infection prevention and isolation precautions while modeling PPE best practices
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners such as PT/RT/Pharmacy/Radiology and Rapid Response teams to optimize patient outcomes
• Float to other units within the OSU organization when required to support patient care needs

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, with strong Neuro ICU experience preferred
• Travel experience required; first-time travelers will be screened
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications preferred; NIHSS preferred
• Demonstrated competence in ventilator management and advanced invasive monitoring (EVD/ICP)
• Comfortable with arterial/central line care, blood product administration and advanced IV therapy
• Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts and every-other-weekend coverage
• Flu vaccine required per facility guideline (medical exemptions only); COVID-19 vaccine not required per facility guideline

Knowledge & Skills

• Neurocritical care and stroke management
• Mechanical ventilation and airway management (ETT suctioning, HFNC, BiPAP/CPAP)
• EVD/ICP monitoring and lumbar drain management
• Arterial/central/PICC line access and maintenance
• Titration of vasoactive and cardiac drips, continuous IV sedation
• Blood product administration and phlebotomy skills
• Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias and 12-lead EKGs
• Infection prevention, isolation precautions and appropriate PPE use
• Procedural sedation monitoring and emergency medication administration
• Collaborative interdisciplinary communication and rapid response teamwork
