Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate psychiatric care and direct support to patients in a correctional mental health setting
• Assist licensed nursing staff with medication administration, observation, and documentation as appropriate to licensure
• Monitor and report changes in patient status, behavior, and safety concerns promptly and accurately
• Use therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques to maintain a safe environment
• Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to individualized care planning
• Complete required clinical documentation and follow facility policies and procedures
• Support orientation activities and mentor newer staff during the training period

Qualifications

• Active California Licensed Psychiatric Technician (LPT) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license required
• Comfort working evenings (2:00 PM - 10:30 PM) and in a correctional healthcare environment
• Ability to pass facility onboarding, background checks, and any required screenings
• Professional, compassionate attitude and strong communication skills
• Orientation period: 2 weeks (completed as part of onboarding)

Education

• Completion of an accredited Psychiatric Technician program or Vocational Nursing program
• High school diploma or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong therapeutic communication and de-escalation skills
• Clinical observation, patient assessment, and accurate documentation
• Familiarity with medication administration principles appropriate to LPT/LVN scope
• Ability to work effectively on an interdisciplinary team and follow structured policies
• Crisis management, safety protocols, and situational awareness in correctional settings
