Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate personal care and assistance with activities of daily living for residents in a mental health setting
• Observe and document changes in patient behavior and condition, and promptly report concerns to nursing leadership
• Support therapeutic and recreational activities that promote mental wellbeing and recovery
• Maintain accurate, timely charting and handoffs to ensure continuity of care
• Follow safety, infection control, and facility protocols to protect patients, staff, and the secure environment
• Collaborate with nurses, mental health professionals, and correctional staff to deliver coordinated care

Qualifications

• Active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required
• Experience in mental health or behavioral health settings preferred
• Comfortable and professional working within a correctional facility environment (Pelican Bay State Prison)
• Willingness to complete a 2-3 week orientation
• Strong communication skills and the ability to de-escalate and handle challenging situations

Education

• Completion of a state-approved CNA program or equivalent
• High school diploma or GED preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of basic nursing care and activities of daily living
• Familiarity with mental health patient needs and safe handling techniques
• Ability to accurately observe, document, and communicate clinical changes
• Skill in following established safety and infection control procedures
• Teamwork and collaboration in multidisciplinary care settings
