Roles & Responsibilities

• Plan and lead therapeutic recreational activities tailored to individuals and groups in a mental health correctional setting
• Assess clients’ functional and psychosocial needs and document progress in clear, concise clinical notes
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary mental health team to create goal-driven treatment plans
• Provide trauma-informed interventions and behavior management strategies that prioritize safety and dignity
• Adapt programming to meet security guidelines and facility policies while maximizing therapeutic benefit
• Train and mentor support staff or volunteers to expand program capacity and effectiveness
• Monitor outcomes and modify interventions to ensure measurable improvements in functioning

Qualifications

• Degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field preferred
• Certification or credential in Recreational Therapy (e.g., CTRS) preferred; state requirements vary
• Experience or strong interest in mental health programming; correctional experience a plus
• Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon start)
• Ability to complete facility-required background checks and clearances
• Strong documentation skills and comfort working within multidisciplinary teams

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Psychology, Sociology, or related field preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Skilled in group facilitation and designing therapeutic activities
• Knowledge of mental health interventions and behavior management techniques
• Strong clinical documentation and outcome-tracking skills
• Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity, and de-escalation skills
• Ability to adapt programming to meet security and institutional guidelines
