Roles & Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality progressive/telemetry care to adult and geriatric orthopedic trauma patients on the PCU/Stepdown unit
• Monitor cardiac rhythms, interpret dysrhythmias, and activate rapid response or code teams when necessary
• Manage advanced respiratory therapies including BiPAP/CPAP, HFNC and non-invasive airway support
• Provide tracheostomy care and chest tube management using Emerson/PleurEvac systems
• Start and maintain IVs, manage central lines and PICCs, and safely administer blood products
• Document all patient care accurately and promptly in Epic
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners (PT, Respiratory, Pharmacy, Social Work, etc.) to coordinate comprehensive care
• Adhere to isolation precautions/PPE guidelines and support infection prevention efforts
• Support patient and family education around procedures, therapies and discharge needs
• Be prepared to float to other units within the OSU organization as staffing needs require

Qualifications

• Epic charting experience required
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant nursing experience (progressive care/telemetry or similar)
• ACLS and BLS preferred
• Previous charge experience preferred
• Teaching hospital experience preferred; Trauma Level I experience preferred
• Flu vaccine required (medical exemptions only); COVID-19 vaccine not required per facility guideline
• Comfort and competence with telemetry/PCU/stepdown level care and rapid response/code team participation

Knowledge & Skills

• Tracheostomy care/management
• IV therapy / phlebotomy; starting and maintaining IVs
• Central line and PICC line care/management
• Blood product administration
• Cardiac monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
• Management of cardiac drips (per protocol) and PCA familiarity
• BiPAP/CPAP management and non-invasive airway support
• High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) use
• Chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac)
• Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
• Telemetry and progressive care unit workflows
• Wound care / Wound VAC and skin graft care
• Feeding tube care and GI management basics
• Isolation precautions / PPE and infection control practices
• Use of rapid response and code teams
• Orthopedic trauma care, total joint replacement familiarity, and traction management
