Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform initial health assessments of new inmates, including medical/surgical history and medication review
- Review health histories and compile clinical information to inform ongoing care
- Observe symptoms and carry out treatments ordered by the Jail Physician
- Notify the Jail Physician when medical assessment or intervention is needed
- Carry out physician orders for medication administration and therapeutic treatments
- Conduct sick call triage to prioritize inmate needs for physician evaluation
- Perform Tuberculin skin tests and provide HIV screening and counseling
- Arrange and coordinate health and mental health referrals for inmates
- Institute and maintain infection control practices to limit communicable disease spread
- Order medications from pharmacy, ensure around-the-clock availability, and maintain DEA logs
- Prepare and apply wound dressings and provide nursing treatments as authorized
- Maintain accurate medical records and required reports in accordance with regulations
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (New York licensure expected)
- Demonstrated experience in medication administration and medical record keeping
- Proficiency with Tuberculin skin testing and HIV screening and counseling
- Experience managing controlled substances documentation and pharmacy coordination
- Ability to carry out physician orders and perform triage in a correctional setting
- Familiarity with infection control and communicable disease prevention practices
- Effective communication skills for coordinating referrals and working with public health partners
- Knowledge of NYS Department of Corrections regulations preferred
