Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide age-appropriate prevention and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for patients across the lifespan.
• Examine oral tissues, measure and chart periodontal pockets, and perform periodontal therapy.
• Perform coronal polishing, apply topical fluoride, and take and process dental x-rays.
• Record vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature as part of patient assessments.
• Educate patients on home care, oral hygiene, and nutrition to prevent oral disease.
• Manage patient schedule and maintain efficient patient flow to maximize care access.
• Coordinate and conduct dental prevention activities including sealant clinics, health fairs, and Head Start clinics.
• Maintain hygienist supplies and instruments and ensure proper sterilization and infection control practices.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene program (required)
• Bachelor's degree preferred
• Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
• Active Dental Hygiene License in the State of Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (must be obtained within 45 days of start and maintained)
• Clinical Competency Assessment (SEARHC) within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
• High Risk Competency (SEARHC) within 3 months of hire and yearly
• High school diploma or GED

Education

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
• Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
• High school diploma or GED

Knowledge & Skills

• Clinical hygiene best practices and periodontal therapy
• Coronal polishing, topical fluoride application, and dental x-ray techniques
• Periodontal probing and accurate charting
• Strong oral and written communication skills for patient education
• Infection control and instrument sterilization procedures
• Good manual dexterity and ability to sit and work over patients for extended periods
• Accurate clinical judgment and patient-centered care approach
