Medical Laboratory Scientist
Location: Wrangell, AK
Start Date: 04-13-2026

Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Rotating shifts including day and night coverage, weekends and on-call responsibilities required to provide 24-hour laboratory coverage (day, night, weekend rotation; on-call shifts expected)
Candidate Pay Rate: $63 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform all levels of laboratory testing, including CLIA-defined high complexity testing, with precision and care
- Interpret and evaluate test results, identify inconsistencies, and troubleshoot to ensure accurate patient reporting
- Maintain and monitor quality control programs and take corrective actions when performance deviates from standards
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure reliable test results
- Write and review procedures using CLSI format and coordinate updates and distribution of procedure manuals
- Provide LIS consultation and support to clinical staff and the wider SEARHC team
- Train and mentor new employees, laboratory students and clinical staff on best practices
- Assist the laboratory manager with competency evaluations, process improvement projects and regulatory preparedness
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field (or equivalent experience on a year-for-year basis)
- Medical Technologist (ASCP) OR Clinical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) OR equivalent national credential
- One (1) year of progressive clinical experience or one (1) year hospital internship following degree
- Must be able to submit two fingerprint cards immediately and complete a background check (clearance required before start)
- Comfortable working rotating day/night shifts, weekends and taking on-call responsibilities
- Experience with CLIA high complexity testing, LIS operation, quality control and regulatory compliance (CLIA/CAP/Joint Commission)
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field
- OR progressively responsible work-related experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis
- One year of progressive clinical experience or one year hospital internship following degree
Knowledge & Skills
- High complexity testing and specimen handling expertise
- Proficiency with LIS operation and laboratory software applications
- Strong quality control knowledge and troubleshooting skills
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation maintenance and inventory management
- Understanding of CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements
- Skills in procedure writing (CLSI format), staff training and process improvement
- Effective oral and written communication, teamwork and the ability to work independently
