Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide skilled, compassionate nursing care to neuro stepdown (SDU) patients with attention to neurologic assessments
• Monitor telemetry and other physiologic data, quickly identifying and escalating changes in patient status
• Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately, following policies and best practices
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team—physicians, therapists, case managers—to create and implement individualized care plans
• Perform thorough documentation in the electronic health record to support continuity and quality of care
• Educate patients and families about condition, treatments and discharge plans in clear, empathetic language
• Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives and safety practices to enhance patient outcomes
• Assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges to maintain smooth patient flow on the unit

Qualifications

• Active, unrestricted RN license (eligible to practice in Louisiana)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS preferred or required per facility policy
• Previous experience in neuro stepdown, telemetry, progressive care, or related acute care settings preferred
• Comfort with 12+ hour shifts and ability to work rotating schedules including nights, weekends and holidays as needed
• Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking and communication skills
• Current immunizations and compliance with facility onboarding requirements

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required or equivalent per facility policy

Knowledge & Skills

• Familiarity with neuro-focused assessments (NIH Stroke Scale, pupil checks, motor/sensory exams)
• Telemetry monitoring and interpretation skills
• IV therapy, medication administration and central line care knowledge
• Proficiency with electronic health record documentation
• Prioritization and time management in a fast-paced acute care environment
• Collaborative teamwork and clear interdisciplinary communication
• Patient and family education with emphasis on safety and discharge planning
