Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform thorough gross examination and dissection of large and complex surgical specimens to aid accurate diagnoses
• Process and properly handle specimens — accession, fix, receipt, labeling and preparation with care
• Prepare and cut frozen sections, cut and stain slides, and operate cryostat equipment when needed
• Collect biological samples for flow cytometry and assist with bone marrow collection procedures
• Triage tumor specimens promptly and efficiently to ensure timely diagnostic workflow
• Document procedures and findings in EPIC accurately and professionally
• Operate specialty equipment safely, including bone saws, and follow all lab safety protocols
• Collaborate closely with pathologists and the larger laboratory team to support oncologic diagnoses

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a hospital clinical laboratory (1 year required; 2+ years preferred)
• Experience performing gross examinations and dissections of both large complex specimens and small biopsies
• Proven ability to perform specimen accessioning, fixation, receipt, labeling, and sectioning
• Experience with frozen section cutting and staining and cryostat operation
• Ability to obtain samples for flow cytometry and assist with bone marrow collection
• EPIC documentation experience preferred
• ASCP-PA certification preferred
• Comfort working with specialty equipment and following strict lab safety procedures

Education

• Master's degree preferred

• Frozen section preparation and staining techniques
• Flow cytometry sample collection procedures
• EPIC/charting documentation and accurate electronic recordkeeping
• Tumor triage and specimen prioritization
• Cryostat and bone saw operation and maintenance awareness
• Specimen accessioning, fixation, labeling, and chain-of-custody best practices
• Ability to teach and mentor residents in gross room techniques
