Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain a sterile field before and during surgical procedures to protect patient safety
• Set up instruments and supplies following established sterile technique and operating room procedures
• Perform accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts to ensure correct counts every time
• Pass instruments and sharps safely and efficiently to the surgeon, minimizing risk of injury or exposure
• Conduct fire safety checks and ensure all equipment and supplies are ready for each procedure
• Participate in age-specific care and follow departmental orientation and annual inservice training
• Maintain clean, safe, and sanitary operating rooms before, during and after procedures
• Work collaboratively under the direction of the Registered Nurse as an integral member of the surgical team

Qualifications

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) — required
• Current, maintained competencies and certifications as required by the facility
• Proven ability to perform sterile field setup and surgical instrument handling
• Skilled in sponge/needle/instrument counts and Correct Site Procedure adherence
• Comfortable working Monday-Friday day shifts with on-call responsibilities and following OR policies

Education

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required; completion of an accredited surgical technologist program preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile technique and sterile field management
• Surgical instrument handling and passing instruments/sharps
• Sponge, needle and instrument counting procedures
• Operating room setup and turnover procedures
• Patient safety practices including Correct Site Procedure and fire safety checks
• Familiarity with age-specific care considerations in the OR
