Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide safe, compassionate inpatient psychiatric nursing care to adult patients with schizophrenia-spectrum, bipolar, and major depressive disorders
• Administer medications accurately using Pyxis and document in Epic to maintain medication safety
• Use de-escalation techniques and therapeutic approaches to reduce restraint/seclusion and promote patient stability
• Perform thorough assessments, monitor patient status, and communicate changes clearly using SBAR
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members (pharmacy, social services, PT/Respiratory, radiology) to coordinate care
• Float to designated units as needed, adapting your skills to similar behavioral health settings
• Participate in orientation, in-service training, and unit-based education to maintain competency and quality standards

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of inpatient psychiatric nursing experience required
• BCLS (and MOAB) required or will be provided by the facility; BLS recommended
• Experience caring for patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and major depression
• Comfortable administering psychiatric medications (antianxiety agents, antidepressants) and general medication administration
• Familiarity with Epic charting, Pyxis medication systems, and SBAR communication
• Ability to float to other medical and behavioral health units and provide reliable coverage (every other weekend)
• Flu vaccine required (medical or religious exemptions allowed); COVID-19 vaccine not required per facility guideline

Education

• Nursing diploma, Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (per facility requirements)

Knowledge & Skills

• Inpatient psychiatric nursing practices and safety protocols
• Medication administration and monitoring (including antianxiety and antidepressant agents)
• De-escalation techniques and behavioral interventions
• Electronic charting with Epic and medication workflows with Pyxis
• Clear, structured communication using SBAR
• Ability to work interdisciplinary and support unit staffing ratios (target 1:8, typical census 16)
