Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide age-specific prevention and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for patients across the lifespan
• Perform thorough oral examinations, periodontal charting, coronal polishing, topical fluoride applications, and diagnostic x-rays
• Measure and document periodontal pockets and record vital signs as part of patient assessment
• Deliver clear, patient-centered education on oral hygiene, home care and nutrition to prevent disease
• Manage and coordinate patient scheduling and flow to ensure efficient clinic operations
• Maintain hygienist supplies and instruments, including strict sterilization and infection control procedures
• Coordinate and conduct community prevention activities such as sealant clinics, Head Start clinics, and health fairs
• Perform other assigned duties that support high-quality patient care and clinic function

Qualifications

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required); Bachelor's degree preferred
• Active Dental Hygiene License (Alaska preferred; license from another U.S. state acceptable)
• Passage of the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
• Basic Life Support (BLS) — American Heart Association (must be obtained within 45 days of start and maintained)
• Clinical Competency Assessment (SEARHC) required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
• High Risk Competency (SEARHC) required within 3 months of hire and annually
• High school diploma or GED

Education

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
• Bachelor's Degree in a related field (preferred)
• High school diploma or GED (required)

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong knowledge of infection control techniques and sterilization best practices
• Understanding of dental and periodontal disease processes and appropriate therapies
• Competence with dental radiography (x-rays) and related safety protocols
• Excellent clinical hygiene skills and accurate clinical judgment
• Effective oral and written communication skills for patient education
• Good manual dexterity and the ability to sit and work over patients for extended periods
• Scheduling and patient flow management experience
