Roles & Responsibilities

• Transport and position patients safely and comfortably before and after surgical procedures
• Prepare patients and operating rooms for scheduled surgeries, ensuring everything is just right
• Open sterile supplies and set up sterile fields with precision
• Assist surgeons by passing instruments and suture, keeping the flow seamless
• Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sutures, and sponges to ensure patient safety
• Apply dressings and bandages as needed, providing that final touch of care
• Help identify and safely handle specimens, supporting accurate lab results
• Decontaminate instruments and equipment using proper infection control protocols
• Keep the OR running efficiently by turning over rooms quickly and restocking supplies

Qualifications

• Graduate of an ARC/STSA-accredited OR technician program, or equivalent on-the-job, military, or specialized training
• Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA or NCCT preferred, with non-certified candidates having proof of training accepted
• Current BLS/BCLS certification from the American Heart Association
• At least 2 years of operating room experience (or 6 months with specialized training for non-certified candidates)
• Active Illinois state license or eligibility to obtain one
• Comfortable with call rotation, including one weeknight and two weekend days per month

Education

• High School diploma or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

• Solid understanding of sterile technique and surgical asepsis
• Expert patient positioning for various procedures
• Skilled in instrument passing and anticipating surgeon needs
• Knowledge of specimen handling and proper labelling
• Efficient operating room turnover and supply restocking
• Familiarity with Point Click EMR
• Strong teamwork and clear communication in a fast-paced environment
• Attention to detail and commitment to patient safety
